Under the lawn behind the University of Utah’s Sterling Sill Center, mechanical engineering professor Kent Udell MS’78 PhD’80 has buried a 35-foot-wide by 40-foot-deep “ice ball” about 10 feet below the surface. On a spring afternoon, he stops to sit on a patch of grass marked by a web of shallow trenches as he checks the tubing covered by green valve boxes that provide the only evidence above ground of his experiment in testing how heat and cold can be stored for later use.   Full story . . .

PLYMOUTH, UT – Dr. Jacob Kingston, a U of U Mechanical Engineering graduate and the President and CEO of Washakie Renewable Energy, is creating green jobs and helping the environment in Utah. Cody Perkins, nicknamed “Flash”, triumphantly returned to Salt Lake this week from Topeka, Kansas, as the Top Alcohol Dragster at the National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA) Summer Nationals. The race was held on Sunday, May 29, where Perkins clocked his best time of the year: traveling a quarter of a mile in 5.37 seconds, traveling 263.15 mph. Zane Beadles (Mechanical Engineering Alumnus) Named MWC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Zane Beadles, a first-team All-American as a senior on the Utah football team last year, has been named the 2009-10 Mountain West Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Beadles, who is now playing for the Denver Broncos as a second-round draft pick, graduated from Utah last December with a 3.568 cumulative GPA and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
