The first attempt at a composite box/I-beam went as follows:
The ply setup was:
Left Channel
+45
−45
+45
Middle channel plies were wrapped around the tool
−45 seam at top
+45 seam at bottom
−45 seam at top
Right Channel
+45
−45
+45
3/4″ noodle
Release agent was used on the top and bottom cauls instead of teflon
Problems:
The noodle was too small or the channel walls flexed, not providing equal pressure on the webs. 2″ noodle used in the future.
Symmetric but unbalanced layup.
Future layup
Left — +45,−45,−45,+45
Middle — −45,+45,+45,−45
Right — +45,−45,−45,+45
Teflon will be used on the cauls.
Teflon film will be wrapped around the middle tool.
