Sponsor a Project
WHY SPONSOR A PROJECT?
Sponsoring a project allows you to contribute to educating the next generation of mechanical engineers by offering them a real-world industry experience, while simultaneously advancing long-term projects or breadboard ideas. Students understand all aspects of the mechanical design process, and possess the skills necessary to successfully complete an industry-sponsored project, including technical skills, teamwork, professional communication, and ethics. Students are mentored throughout the entire project, which leads to thoughtful and clever mechanical engineering design, professional documentation, and functional prototypes.
WHAT SHOULD SPONSORS EXPECT?
- You get to know and evaluate students with specific interest in your company and industry, which often leads to full-time hiring!
- Advising the Capstone team and receiving project status update (1 hour every 2 weeks on average)
- You advance your project without requiring in-house resources
- Your company gains brand awareness with top-tier mechanical engineering students
- Contribute to the local community by providing mentorship to educate the next generation of mechanical engineers who will shape Utah’s future.
- Give back to U Engineering
SPONSOR REQUIREMENTS
ADVISORY ROLE
Once a project is underway, the sponsor’s primary point of contact will be the project advisor, who is often a Mechanical Engineering Faculty member. An engineer from the industry sponsor is invited to serve as an advisor or co-advisor if they wish. At a minimum, a liaison from the company should meet periodically with the student team to provide feedback.
COST
The cost for an organization to sponsor a project in the Capstone Design Program is $19,000. Out of this amount, $5,000 is set aside for materials and other resources that the project will require.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
All intellectual property (IP) is assigned to the sponsor, executed before the Capstone project begins.
